So you want to set up your own website but you don’t know where to start?  Below are the MUSTS when setting up your website whether you are paying someone to design and set up the website or doing it yourself with the many variety of website tools available on the market today.  Protect yourself AND your website!

1.  OWN YOUR OWN DOMAIN NAME

Don’t get caught without ownership of your own domain.  The domain you chose is YOURS and YOU should own it.  Don’t allow a designer of developer to register your domain on your behalf without insuring it is in YOUR name and all contact information goes to your address and email.  This is one of the most common problems when you go to change hosting services or decide to change website managers and/or designers.  Don’t let someone hold your domain hostage.

What do you do?  How much does it cost?
For low cost domain registration, use GoDaddy.com.

2. SECURE RELIABLE HOSTING
One of the most common problems I see when working with clients is unreliable hosting or hosting packages that won’t support what the client wants to do with their web presence.  Don’t get caught in a trap where an unreliable host won’t let you do what you want to do.  Secure reliable, inexpensive hosting that YOU control.

Two hosts I use often (for plans less than $100 a year) are Bluehost and InMotion Hosting.  They have terrific customer service and the easy to use cpanel to manage your website and email.

Once you set up the two steps above, you are ready to move on to the design and content of your website.
